Liquid Memory: Why Wine Matters by Jonathan Nossiter

Jonathan Nossiter, award-winning filmmaker (Mondovino) and former sommelier( Balthazar), believes that wine is "memory in its most liquid and dynamic form," an essential art. He likens wine to deeply embedded cultural expressions like cinema, literature, and even sex. He explores the power of the origin story and concept of terroir, that great wine transmits a sense of place and even time.

The book veers pretentious (lovers of big oaky Cabs, be warned!), and may come across as grandiose as Nossiter attacks globalization and corporatization of the wine industry, but at its heart it is strikingly intellectual, and a plea for a return to purity of flavor and a reminder of the importance of our roots.
